Despite strong sales of its two fourth-quarter releases, Timelapse and Cyberflix's Titanic: Adventure Out of Time, the corporate parent of GTE Interactive Media has pulled the plug on the division that released such hits as FX Fighter and The Rolling Stones: Voodoo Lounge Interactive.

GTE Interactive will shut down March 14, although director of marketing communications Rik Sandoval says gamers who have recently purchased GTE games shouldn't worry, since the division is keeping enough staff on hand to support the titles through June 1.

"We believe that anyone who has bought one of our games by March will probably experience any problems they are going to by June, so we think we'll have most computer gamers covered," he says.

As for all games that were not released by last Christmas, GTE is canceling them outright, though Sandoval says GTE is continuing to ship stock of existing titles to retailers through the end of January.

According to Sandoval, success was not a factor in GTE's decision to shut down its interactive operations, which accounted for $20 million in revenue during 1995.

"GTE simply decided that it didn't want to be in the content-creation business anymore," he says.

Both Timelapse and Titanic have sold well, says GTE Interactive vice president of sales Dick Larkin.

"I don't have the final PC Data figures available to me, but from looking at our own retail tracking, it wouldn't surprise me if Timelapse snuck into the top 10 best-selling games for the first quarter, and Titanic the top 20," Larkin says-George T. Chronis
